Your Weekly Leadership HVA (High Value Activity)

Hello Lifelong Learner ...

Here's the next in our series of weekly managerial TIPS (Techniques, Insights, and Practical Solutions) to help you better engage your team in the activities that lead to higher performance.

CORE Bites #13: While growing up in the far reaches of the Canadian North there was a popular saying that helped us find humor in the barren, frozen tundra around us: “Choose carefully which rut you drive in because you'll be in it for the next 20 miles.” In essence, during the winter months tire tracks will freeze and form ruts that get deeper and deeper throughout the winter. Drivers often find it easier to stay in the rut than to forge a new path through the snow. Although humor-based, this colloquialism is an excellent reminder that each of us — regardless of our views on change — can occasionally find ourselves in this metaphorical 'rut' because there's comfort in what's familiar; in what we know and know how to do; in the safety and security of predictable patterns and habits. But (and you knew this was coming!), in business, continual change is inevitable (and an absolute requirement) because if the pace of change on the outside exceeds the pace of change on the inside, we're in big trouble! Innovation and change is anything but “business as usual.”

High Value Activity (HVA) Action Step: This week (starting today), embrace the positive aspects of change because, according to Wayne Dyer, "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change!" Here's a few positive characteristics of change worth considering:

  • Change Keeps You Agile and Flexible: With change, you never get too 'set in your ways' (routinized). You become more open and receptive to new ideas and ways of performing your work. You also add a layer of 'breadth' to the 'depth' of your job function which adds to your bench strength and to your marketability in the future. Success in management requires learning as fast as the world is changing. Stop being afraid of what could go wrong, and start being excited by what can go right.
  • Change Creates New Growth Opportunities: Competencies are constantly challenged by change! You can't grow unless you're willing to change and without growth ... you stay the same (not a good place if you want to advance yourself inside your organization). Remember, if it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you. Note: You don't have to like all aspects of change (a baby needs to grow through the pain of teething to end up with a full set of teeth) but there will always be useful learning and experiences along the way.
  • Change Builds Self-Confidence: The correlation between change and personal/professional growth has been well established. Being in your comfort zone can lead to some contentment for a while, but as time goes on you lose or simply don't acquire skills and abilities that keep you relevant and able to provide increasing value to your organization. With each change (and subsequent adaptation) your self-worth and self-esteem develop. This provides resilience and/or strength and/or the knowledge to deal with further changes when they occur (and they will).

A final thought: Organizations don't need supervisors who “manage change” ... what they need are LEADERS who lead the organization into the future. And this will require change. Are YOU ready to take the lead?

I'd love to hear how this HVA works for you!

Have a brilliant day ... and enjoy the journey!
