Hello Lifelong Learner ...
Here's the next in our series of weekly managerial TIPS (Techniques, Insights, and Practical Solutions) to help you better engage your team in the activities that lead to higher performance.
CORE Bites #4: Some leaders go through life with an incredible amount of ‘behavioral awareness' and seem to intuitively know just what to do to handle situations that arise. These leaders sense when to probe just a little bit more; when to use a slightly stronger approach or when to back off a little; when to show empathy or when to be firm. With that said, some of us (myself included) have to constantly work on this important skill so we don't miss the behavioral ‘clues' that can guide and inform us ... and help us interact more effectively. (Note: This skill is just as relevant at home as it is at work.)
HVA Action Step: This week (starting today!) hold up an awareness ‘mirror' for clues. Metaphorically, this ‘mirror’ reflects how you’re being perceived when you interact with your employees. For example, when you say you care, do people perceive you as caring? When you say you’ll support them, do they actually see you as supportive? If you believe you’re a visionary, can your people see the future with clarity? If you look closely into this ‘mirror,’ the clues will be there. Use this information to shift WHAT and HOW you communicate.
I'd love to hear how this HVA works for you!
Have a brilliant day ... and enjoy the journey!
